High Schools Helping Tennyson Center
Mountain Vista High School's Hero Week 2010
Tennyson Center for Children recently witnessed the caring spirit in action among young adults in our community. And that spirit is thriving among the Golden Eagles of Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch, CO.
Each year in early February the school enjoys Hero Week, where students and faculty participate in a number of activities which help to celebrate that caring spirit. And each year, the student body selects a Cause-of-Choice to help raise community awareness about a variety of important issues. This year, MVHS chose Tennyson Center for Children from among numerous other charities which had been nominated. Hero Week is Mountain Vista's mid-winter equivalent to Homecoming and a number of activities take place as part of the celebration, including "Vista Idol", the MVHS version of the popular reality TV show, "American Idol." The week culminated with the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, which sported an "Alice in Wonderland" theme this year.
And we are truly honored (and, to be honest, a bit blown away!!!) to report that the student body of MVHS raised---DRUM ROLL PLEASE---$7,000 for Tennyson Center for Children!!!!
We were invited to attend and speak at the Hero Week assembly, where the entire 2,000 member student body got a chance to learn more about Tennyson Center for Children as well as how they might get more involved in community-giving projects. Not only was it a sincere pleasure to attend the mid-week event, but it also showed Tennyson Center representatives in attendance what an incredible group of young adults it is which comprises the entire student body.
Thanks, Mountain Vista Golden Eagles!
Regis Students Make a Lasting Impression
Mentoring a child is not always an easy task – especially if that child has suffered a series of life crisis at a young age. So you can imagine how inspired we were by the relationships formed between our kiddos and Regis Jesuit High School students over the past month. At Tennyson Center we value our volunteer mentors because we understand the importance of developing healthy social and academic skills that will help our kids succeed later in life.
Prior to graduation, the juniors and seniors at Regis are required to pursue a 60-hour Community Service project which will develop mentoring skills through their involvement with an organization of their choice. Tennyson Center was honored to once again be selected as this year’s community service project. Over the past few weeks both the girl’s and boys’ service division spent invaluable time on our campus mentoring the children in our care. The one-on-one attention our kids received in and out of the classroom was beyond measure. Our young Regis mentors gave the children we serve at Tennyson Center over 480 hours of dedication, tutoring and, most importantly, friendship!!
We are grateful for the positive influence given to the children we serve and we are not only honored to have the support of today’s youth but we are also comforted to know that the world of tomorrow is going to be in such capable and caring hands.
